===========================================================

THE STORY

1st generation
1930s-40s, before the war, Malacca and Singapore

The Huangs are an influential family in Malacca. The head of the house, Huang Yuan (Yan Bingliang) is a businessman, and his son, Jincheng (Darren Lim) helps him. His wife, Guihua (Lin Meijiao) makes sure her presence is felt and nurtures her daughter, Meiyu (Apple Hong) to become a good Peranakan girl, who can cook well, make kueh, sew and embroider beaded-shoes. Then there is Tianlan (Xiang Yun), who is Huang Yuan’s 2nd wife. She was previously a servant who was in charge of looking after Old Mrs. Huang. Old Mrs. Huang has since passed away, leaving no place in the house for Tianlan and her daughter Juxiang (Jeanette Aw).

This era focuses on Juxiang and how she suffered in her family. Although deaf-mute, she was a strong woman who refused to bow to her fate. Victimised and ill-treated, she was a wonderful cook, and made delicious kueh. Her sewing and embroidery were considered one of the very best in her generation.

Her looks and personality caught the eye of 3 men - Charlie Zhang (Desmond Sim), a lecherous businessman; Yamamoto Yousuke (Shanben Yangjie), a young Japanese photographer; and Chen Sheng (Pierre Png), a guy from a rich family.

Determined not to marry Charlie Zhang as his 2nd wife, she ran away from home, and almost got caught by human traffickers. Yamamoto Yousuke (Shanben Yangjie) saved her, but Charlie caught her. Yamamoto Yousuke (Shanben Yangjie) saved her once again, and brought her back to Singapore, where he married her.

They had a daughter, Yueniang. However, war came, and being Japanese, Yamamoto Yousuke (Shanben Yangjie) and Juxiang were attacked. Juxiang and Yamamoto Yousuke (Shanben Yangjie) die, leaving their 8 year old daughter, Yueniang.

Chen Sheng marries Meiyu, but is unhappy with the marriage. He chooses to fritter his life away by dancing and singing daily to escape from his fate.

Other sub-plots include the love triangle between sisters -Xiufeng (Pan Lingling) and Xiujuan (Cynthia Koh)- and Jincheng (Darren Lim) which goes into the 2nd generation. Xiufeng marries Jincheng, and they have 3 children. However, he still loved Xiujuan, and he had an affair with her…

2nd generation
1960s-70s, Malacca and Singapore

This era focuses on Juxiang’s daughter, Yueniang, and her cousins - Yuzhu (Joanne Peh) and Zhenzhu (Eelyn Kok). Yueniang’s fate is pretty much like her mother’s, as she is bullied by her family members. To protect her grandmother Tianlan, who brought her up, she lived life strongly and bravely.

Even though she and Chen Xi (Qi Yuwu) loved each other, the family did not approve of their relationship, and she was sold to gangster, Liu Yi Dao (Yao Wenlong). Not one to succumb to fate, she rebelled and refused to let Yi Dao get his way. He was impressed by her strength and courage, and they became sworn siblings after that.

Yuzhu is a kind and gentle girl, who was Yueniang’s good friend. She even thought Yueniang to read and write. Liking Chen Xi (Qi Yuwu), she soon realised that he only had place for Yueniang in his heart. As if that was not bad enough, she was raped by Charlie Zhang’s equally lecherous son, Robert Zhang, and was forced to marry him… She gives up on life, and goes into depression.

Zhenzhu is Yuzhu’s sister, with a character totally opposite to her sister’s. She is selfish, unscrupulous, and downright evil. She sees Yueniang as a thorn in her flesh, as she also likes Chen Xi, and thus, pushes Yueniang into the well. She sees her sister being raped, but did nothing to help her. Even though she married Chen Xi in the end, he never loved her.

Meiyu, who has a deep grude against Juxiang, decides to take it out on her daughter, Yueniang. She is partly responsible for breaking lovers Chen Xi and Yueniang up.

Many ups and downs occur, and the Huang family business declines. It comes down to Yueniang to save the family business.

4th generation
2008, Malacca

Yueniang’s grand-daughter, Anqi (Felicia Chin) comes to Malacca to visit her, from Canada, where she was studying. Following her is Li Xiuwen (Nat Ho), who is serious in wooing Anqi, but she keeps ignoring him. Either that, or she makes fun of him.

It is to Anqi and Xiuwen that Yueniang relates the past to. She tells them more about the Peranakan culture, and how life was back then.

Because of money, he is forced to ‘marry’ massage palour proprietress Paris (Iko Liu) in a fake marriage… Later, Qianqian (Apple Hong), San Wan’s beautiful vietnamese bride comes to Singapore. She is very innocent, and falls into Zhigang’s trap. He wants to elope with her…

Mary (Patricia Mok) and Robert (Nelson Chia-Xie Shenjie) have 3 children, Weijie (Peng Xiuxuan), Weiye (Lin Jun Hao) and Tingting (Lin Jia’an). They were working in a bank until they were retrenched, and have no plans of finding another job. They just sleep and loathe all day, living on the government’s financial aid. Mary and Robert even encourage Tingting, who has a glib tongue, to cheat people of their money, by pretending to be miserable. They harbour dreams of going overseas, even though they don’t even have enough money to get through their daily lives. They try means and ways to get people to realise how ‘miserable’ they are, and hope to get money should people pity them.

Mr. Fang (Zhang Wei), a retired school teacher, lives with his brother, Pao (Yan Bingliang), an ex-convict, and Pao’s delinquent daughter, Meiling (Li Tianle). To prevent Meiling from going out of the house, they tie her up. She manages to escape in the middle of the night, and the commotion wakes all the neighbours, who try to stop her. This makes Pao grateful to his neighbours. It turns out that Lian (Chen Huihui), the mad woman in the neighbourhood, is Meiling’s mother.

‘ka-fei’ shu (Liang Tian) and ‘ka-fei’ sao (He Bin) run a coffee store in the hawker centre. Although they have 2 grow-up children who are well-educated - older son Jianhui (Rayson tan) holds a doctorate, and younger daughter Shumin (Ong Ai Leng) is a high-flying career woman, they continue to stay in their rental flat. Shumin turns up one day and announces that she and her husband will apply for them to stay in a 3-room flat at Bedok Central. However, they must sign a will which is in her favour. She then asks them to look after her son, as the private neighbourhood she is currently staying in has dengue cases.

Thus, the story about the ceramic water tub begins. Seen by Shumin as a hazard, as she is afraid her son might drown in it, she asks her parents to get rid of it. It ends up in Ma po-po’s house, where Mr. Fang sees it, and researches. It resembles a nine-dragon tub bought in Hong Kong for US$2 million over 50 years ago, and Mr. Fang deduces that it is a fake. Zhigang loses it while running away from his creditors, and it is picked up by Weijie. But it still travels, and ends up in all the neighbours’ houses, and when it is finally known that it may be an antique worth a few million US dollars, no one knows where it has gone…

Everyone tries to get their hands on it…

Perfect Cut

SYNOPSIS (credits to Mediacorp for the basic info)
i’ve rewritten the synopsis below by myself. in my own words

Tao Dashun (Chen Shucheng) owns and runs a floral nursery and has 4 daughters - Ling Lan (Constance Song), Zi Jing (Ivy Lee), Hai Tong (Felicia Chin) and Wen Zhu (Koh Yah Hwee). A widower, and having a traditional outlook, his daughters are not very close to him.

His nursery is his labour of love - it reminds him of his late wife - but none of his daughters are interested in taking over. Later, he decides to sell it to help Zi Jing pay off her gambling debts. The buyer is rich ABC (American born Chinese) Ma Da Ji (Zhang Yaodong), a young man who knows nothing about the industry. Hai Tong, being very shrewd, takes advantage of this to make life better for her father, by making Da Ji pay him an enormous amount to run the whole show. Towards the end of this installment, he realises that he actually has a son - Wen Hao (Terence Cao), with his old flame Miaochang (Hong Hui Fang).

Oldest daughter Ling Lan and her father are estranged, as he sent her to the drug rehabilitation centre when she was 18. She has not returned home since then. Her boyfriend ran away, leaving her with their daughter, Yiling (Chen Chuxuan). They currently live with Lu Gua (Chen Tianwen), who is a horrible man. He engages in illegal activity and secretly has designs on Yiling.

Zi Jing is married to Yun Kaiwang (Zheng Geping), they run a flower stall, and they have a daughter, which causes them to be constantly picked on by Kaiwang’s mother, Baozhuan (Jin Yinji), who hopes for a grandson. Kaiwang’s sister, Cai Xia (Patricia Mok), gloats over the fact that she and her husband Qing Xiong (Rayson Tan) have a son. However, they are back to live with Baozhuan because they are bankrupt. With their appearance, the harmony in the household declines further. It is compounded by the fact that Qing Xiong has a Vietnamese second wife, Yuan Er-bo (Priscelia Chan), and when Kaiwang tries to help his brother-in-law cover up, Er-bo ends up falling in love with him. Zi Jing leaves, and her compulsive gambling habits are exposed. Top it up with Qing Xiong’s schemes which make Kaiwang the scapegoat, the couple have many problems which take a long time to solve.

Hai Tong is a very shrewd woman who is proud and confident. With her boyfriend, Guo Zipeng (Adam Chen), they run a floral hamper shop. Zipeng always has to give in to her and as their relationship is not solid, he cheats on her with his old girlfriend. Unable to be humble, she dumps him and returns to her father’s nursery to start anew. There, her relationship with Da Ji advances to a closer level. Hoping that she’ll persuade him to stay, he is disappointed when she lets him sell the nursery and join his parents in China.

Youngest daughter Wen Zhu is a happy-go-lucky undergrad who wins a university beauty pageant and is talent-spotted by the TV station and cast in a drama serial. She likes Da Ji. When in the entertainment industry, she endures the wrath of actress Yanning (May Phua) who makes her life difficult. Image consultant Zhigang (Ben Yeo) becomes her good friend, and he falls in love with her. However, she starts to distance herself from Zhigang when bad media focuses on her fight with Yanning, and speculation that Zhigang is a sissy and maybe gay. Because of her brother-in-law Lu Gua’s antics, she knocks her head and develops a blood clot and is unable to concentrate on her acting career when she is constantly attacked by severe headaches.

The Golden Path

Starring: Chen Liping as Xiao-gu, Li Nanxing as Ah-Jin/Jin Long, Tay Ping Hui as Huang Kaijie, Felicia Chin as Lin Fei, Joanne Peh as Huang Kaiqi, Chew Chor Meng as Huang Kaida, Joey Feng Jinyu as Jin Feng, Cai Peixuan as Zhen (Rou-gu mei), Huang Wenyong as Lin Desheng, Priscelia Chan as Lu Simin, Nat Ho as David, Wang Yuqing as Lin, Carole Lin as Yan, Wen Liling as Ying, Alan Tern as Dejian, Li Wenhai as Cai, Zheng Geping as Hai-ge, Edmund Chen as Cheng, Joey Swee as Cheng-sao, Hong Peixin as Hu, Zhang Wei as Jinlong’s grandfather

In the 1980s, Xiao-gu (Chen Liping) is a widow, who, with her three children, Kaida, Kaijie and Kaiqi, runs her tzi-cha roadside stall. She is known for being able to laugh her days away, her personal motto being “笑也一天,哭也一天,为什么不笑着过一天?”

Oldest son Kaida (陈勇铭 Chen Yong Ming) is very hardworking, and does very well in his studies. The same can’t be said of second son Kaijie (马纬翰 Ma Wei Han), who is playful, and doesn’t like to study. Youngest daughter Kaiqi (捞毓婷 Lao Yuting) is helpful and caring.

Enter Jin Long (张家奇 Fraser Tiong) and Jin Feng (黄磬仪 Huang Qing Yi), siblings who move into the same building as Xiao-gu and her children. Jin Long and Kaijie have already met and can’t stand the sight of each other. They start quarelling whenever they meet. However, Kaiqi takes care of Jin Feng, who is just a few years younger than her. Jin Long has to make money to take care of himself and his sister, as their father is out at sea - he’s a sailor.

Jin Long and Jin Feng’s father is actually not a sailor; he was involved in a large scale robbery of a jewelry shop. He and his 2 partners made off with about $800,000 worth of jewelry. One of his partners was killed during the police chase, not by the police - they only injured him, but by his other partner, Hu.

Xiao-gu takes care of Jin Long and Jin Feng, and she and Ah-Jin soon become close. He proposes marriage. However, not everyone is happy. Jin Long and Kaijie are the only ones who oppose the marriage.

Kaijie witnessed Jin accidentally kill Hu, as Hu was pestering him to participate in another heist, which Jin refused to, as he was going to settle down in a new life with Xiao-gu. After digging around, Kaijie realises that Jin and Hu were robbers. On Xiao-gu and Ah-Jin’s wedding day, he gets Ying to call the police hotline, and report that she knows the robber in the identikit printed in the newspapers.

Jin holds policeman Cai hostage, and runs to an abandoned building. He lets Cai go, and jumps onto the road, where policemen surround him. He points a gun to his head and shoots himself.

TIME PASSES. It is now in the 1990s.

Xiao-gu’s roadside stall has grown into a restaurant. All the children are all grown-up. Jin Long (Li Nanxing) looks exactly like his late father. Kaijie (Tay Ping Hui) is still the same as before, and despises Jin Long.

Jin Long is very close to Kaiqi (Joanne Peh), and he secretly holds a torch for her. Kaida (Chew Chor Meng) is a medical student, still as hardworking as ever. Jin Feng (Joey Feng) is lousy at her studies, and hasn’t even passed her O levels, even though she’s almost 20.

Kaida, Kaijie and Kaiqi are all university students. Jin Long helps out in Xiao-gu’s shop, with no ambition, and Jin Feng dreams of becoming an actress, hating to study.

Enter Lin Fei (Felicia Chin), a rich girl who takes a liking for Jin Long. She keeps pestering him non-stop, and tells everyone that she is his girlfriend. Kaijie likes her, and pursues her, but she only has eyes for Jin Long.

Also playing a part in the story is Ah-Zhen Rou-gu mei (Cai Peixuan), who helps out in Jin Long’s maternal grandfather’s Bak Kut Teh shop. She is a very loyal and hardworking, and allows no one near the shops’ money, even though loan-sharks pester her everyday.

Xiao-gu buys over a dry-market, and puts Jin Long in charge of it. He is not a very capable boss, but Xiao-gu insists that the market is his responsibility.

By My Side

This drama stars:
Chen Hanwei as Chen Bufan, Zoe Tay as Lin Xinya, Rui-en as Zhang Yuhang, Elvin Ng as Chen Buqun, Terence Cao as Zi Xin/Zi Jian, Vina Lim as Chen Tiantian, Zhu Houren as Lin Chunxiao, Zhu Yu Ye as Wang Qiuyue, Chen Tianwen as Andy, Brandon Wong as hui-gou (grey dog), Ong Ai Leng as Cecelia, Ye Shipin as hei-ma (black horse), Benjamin Heng as Xinya’s brother, Melody Chen as Xinya’s brother’s wife

This drama starts with Chen Bufan (Chen Hanwei) passing out after coughing incessantly, and he is taken to the hospital, with his wife Xinya (Zoe Tay) and daughter Tiantian (Vina Lim) following him.

Flashbacks show that Chen Bufan is a loving husband and model father. He works in a meat factory, and his wife is a tutor. Their daughter, Tiantian, is 6 years old, and they are well liked in their neighbourhood.

Scenes in the current and past show the set of events which happened after Bufan discovered he has AIDS. His entire family were discriminated against, and life became very painful for them, as they were regarded like the plague.

I gave up 1/2 way. It got boring and kind of pointless, as it was really miserable… All the info in a drama setting was definitely better than doing it in a magazine programme. I appreciate the fact that this drama set out to create awareness among the masses, and it did it’s job.

Chen Hanwei was brilliant! He looked so sickly, and looked like he was going to collapse and die anytime.

Zoe Tay’s role was quite pointless. She was so cold, and strict.

There was no chemistry between her and Chen Hanwei, even in the beginning, when they were supposed to be a loving couple. Therefore, I was not surprised when they were having a cold-war and all. You couldn’t feel the love between the couple.

On the other hand, I thought Vina Lim as Tiantian did a good job, and kept the life in the show. she was the one who asked questions which everyone watching would, at one point or another. so I think she can be called the audience’s conscious-voice

Rui-en was quite an ‘emo’ character, and Elvin Ng was the one who managed to melt her heart. Rui-en and Elvin as a couple… they were quite sweet.

Terence Cao in the show — quite meaningless. really.

OVERALL, this drama did what it was supposed to do — create awareness about AIDS, and warn people about its dangers. it attempted to show how a family’s love can change almost every situation, and also focused on current issues like unfilial children, discrimination among kids due to adult’s thoughts…

============================================================

my 3 favourite dramas are up there — The Little Nyonya, Just in Singapore and The Golden Path!! yes, they are all productions of Ang Eng Tee 洪荣狄 :) i’d be really happy if any of them win!

but who knows? many years have passed where educational-sponsored dramas have taken the Best Drama title and not really deserved it, considering the other nominations! By My Side might just win based on this! and to be fair, this show has many fans, people like it! it managed to touch on a sensative issue, and bring it close to the people.

everyone expects The Little Nyonya to win, and why not?! it was a really good show, and it was engaging, and full of evil people. but its weak point was that it was too simple a story — it was either black or white, people was just good or bad, no grey, no conflicting struggles within a character.

Just in Singapore was a different kind of show — it was a heartlander-ish based drama, which was funny, and very close to ones heart. one could easily relate to the characters and their struggles for a better life; you cursed the selfish people, and felt pain for the ones who’ve been taken advantage of…

and as for The Golden Path, it was a story about family, greed, love, hate, revenge — a very powerful drama which in terms of production values, is so much more superior to The Little Nyonya. people struggled with their decisions; even the good characters made bad decisions. it was a very suspenseful drama, and the acting was brilliant!

Perfect Cut caused a craze, and a whole lot of loyal followers. although likened to a US series about plastic surgery, this drama brought plastic surgery and psychology closer to us. acting by the guest stars, i’ve heard, were brilliant. i’ve heard tons of praises for this show. this drama is the only Channel U drama which has been nominated in all the Star Awards so far. it stands a high chance of winning too. i’m quite sad that i’ve not watched the 1st season yet, ‘cos they’re airing the 2nd season soon. i should really get down to watching it.

i can confidently say that Love Blossoms won’t win this year. although i personally feel that it’s the best mega-drama (i didn’t see Holland V, saw all the rest), it has no chance this year, ‘cos the rest of the nominations are just too strong. sure, this was a nice drama about family, but not strong in production values. there was too much of things going round-and-round, repeating the same thing again and again, and bickering, shouting. there was just too much of it!

Just Waiting for 26 ApiRL 2009

BEST ACTOR

Adrian Pang as Alan for “Nanny Daddy 奶爸百分百”

Chen Hanwei as Chen Bufan for “By My Side 不凡的爱”

Pierre Png as Chen Sheng for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”

Qi Yu Wu as Chen Xi for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”

Tay Ping Hui as Huang Kaijie for “The Golden Path 黄金路”

Huang Wenyong as Lin Bang for “Just in Singapore 一房半厅一水缸”

there is only competition between Chen Hanwei and Tay Ping Hui. their roles were the most challenging, and would be remembered for ages. they are breakthrough roles, which showcase their brilliant acting skills.

i’m also very glad to see Huang Wenyong in the list! he’s a great actor, but his role in “Just in Singapore” just pales in comparison to the challenging roles which Chen Hanwei and Tay Ping Hui portrayed!

as for Adrian Pang, i can’t really say much, ‘cos i didn’t watch “Nanny Daddy”. his portrayal was pretty OK, very comical.

i don’t know why Pierre Png is nominated for his role in “The Little Nyonya”. his character was rather boring. he just sang and danced and drank all day after the war was over… it was a good effort, and we could see that his command of Chinese had improved, but he’s definately not a strong contender.

Qi Yuwu is another strong contender. although i didn’t really think much of him as Chen Xi, he did as much as a hero-figure would have done. this role marked his return to the small-screen, and he didn’t disappoint. the Best Actor award isn’t for him this year. he should’ve won Best Actor in 2006 for his role in C.I.D. - that role made me see him in a different light, as a really devoted actor.

Tay Ping Hui in “The Golden Path” (based on the fact that Huang Kaijie totally creeped me out. i mean, how can someone be so evil?! please give our ah-ge some recognition! after all these years he only has a Best Supporting Actor win, which was 10 years ago!!)

AitiNg For 26 ApiRL 2009

BEST ACTRESS

Chen Liping as ‘xiao-gu’ for “The Golden Path 黄金路”

Chen Liping as Nancy for “Just in Singapore 一房半厅一水缸”

Fann Wong as Lin Kexin for “The Defining Moment 沸腾冰点”

Felicia Chin as Lin Fei for “The Golden Path 黄金路”

Jeanette Aw as Shanben Yueniang for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”

Joanne Peh as Huang Yuzhu for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”

wow, Chen Liping nominated twice!!

but this will be a tough category. Fann has done this gone-crazy role before, in 2004’s “Beautiful Illusions”. it wasn’t a breakthrough role for her. and i feel that Joanne and Felicia aren’t ready for a Best Actress win yet, based on their experience. they’ve just started playing more challenging roles, and although they may have done well, there are others who’ve surpassed expectations. it is the first time both these princesses have been nominated for Best Actress.

Jeanette Aw was great in “The Little Nyonya”. she totally embraced the 2 roles she was given, and made Juxiang and Yueniang her. think Jeanette Aw, and you’ll remember her in “The Little Nyonya”. think “The Little Nyonya” and you’ll remember her. there isn’t anyone more perfect to be given the role; it’s precisely because Jeanette made it her own. she eluded the feelings and overall characteristics of Juxiang and Yueniang. she is Juxiang; she is Yueniang; she is the little nyonya.

Chen Liping totally deserves her double nominations!! her roles in both shows were very different. although she was nicknamed ‘Xiao-gu’ in “The Golden Path”, she wasn’t always as happy as she looked. she held deep, dark secrets which reflected a choice, a path she chose in order to give her and her children a good life. you could see the pain she went through with her crazy son, her evil son, and the death of her step-daughter. you could feel her joy and her sorrows. Chen Liping just eludes a very mother-ly, close to your heart connection with the audience.
in “Just in Singapore”, she was hillarious as the fake-medium Nancy! you hated her for neglecting and scolding good daughter, played by Fiona Xie, and pouring all her affections and money at her undergrad snobbish daughter, played by Paige Chua. she was not very mother-ly, she did not openly show her care and concern for her daughters, but you could feel that she had the right intensions, and that her bark was worse than her bite.

Star Awards 2009 红星大奖 2009: BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

Chew Chor Meng as Huang Kaida for “The Golden Path 黄金路”
Chew Chor Meng
why: his acting was quite good and convincing in “The Golden Path”, especially since he hadn’t acted for a while until that drama.
He is my favourite artist...Like him so much

Dai Yangtian as Shanben Yangjie for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
Dai Yangtian is just not in the same league as the rest of the nominees; he’s stiff, and still needs a lot more exposure. sure, he made a big impression in “The Little Nyonya”, but just making an impression based on — lets face it, everyone just thinks he looks good. nothing more. theres no substance. not yet, he doesn’t have the acting chops requried for this category. yet. — his looks. and his role, seriously, wasn’t very challenging. yes, i admit he eluded the right personality of this hero figure, to save the damsel in distress, but other than looking ‘cool’ and calm, his acting just didn’t cut it.

ok. i think i’ve explained enough about Dai Yangtian, yes, i’m biased against him. but i feel my explaination doesn’t hint my biasness. argh. whatever.

Darren Lim as Huang Jincheng for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
it isn’t very easy to play a spine-less loser either. i mean, Darren Lim’s Jincheng in “The Little Nyonya” was so irritatingly stupid. he was such a stupid man who refused to stand up for himself, and just listened to what everyone around him said. as a father, he depended so much on the advice of his son. and he managed to look so miserable, but yet, when he was having his affair, his facial expressions were so different, like he was a totally different person. Darren won last year’s Best Supporting Actor for his role in “Kinship”.

Yao Wenlong as Liu Yidao for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
Yao Wenlong is a very versatile actor. i never thought he’d be good as a bare-bodied butcher, wow, very eye-opening. oh gosh, sorry, that sounds wrong.
i felt that he balanced the character of Liu Yidao very well — the boorish fierce side of him, and the very kind-hearted and filial side. it is amusing that he managed to keep his eyes wide open the whole show, it really put the fear in you, especially when he was wielding his chopper!

Zhu Houren for “The Defining Moment 沸腾冰点”
Zhu Houren is brilliant! as seen in many shows, he’s an extremely versatile actor, who fits into any role he’s given. it is the same case with him in “The Defining Moment”, where he goes mad but denies it vehemently. his classic scene was the “踩死你! 踩死你!” bit. so convincingly mad. brilliant!

Zzen as Robert Zhang for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
Zzen. he always plays these ‘pia kia’ roles, but here, he’s not just a ‘pai kia’, he’s an evil kia! muahahahahaha. he was evil, he looked evil, behaved evil, and just didn’t have a redeeming feature in him at all. it was really eye-opening to see him here, ‘cos he portrayed the role so convincingly. WOW. i want him to win!

Star Awards 2009 红星大奖 2009: BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS

Cai Peixuan as Rougu-mei for “The Golden Path 黄金路”
Cai Peixuan impressed in “The Golden Path”, and everyone was asking who she was. it was the first time Singaporean viewers had seen her onscreen (she acted in collaborations aired in Malaysia earlier). she made such an impression that she was soon just called ‘rougu-mei’, after her character in the show. i felt that she did a pretty good job, and held her own, sharing most of her screentime with ah-ge Li Nanxing.

Eelyn Kok as Huang Zhenzhu for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
Eelyn Kok was the evil Zhenzhu in “The Little Nyonya”. she was so selfish, whiny and downright horrible. she did everything for herself, even at the expense of her loved ones (she cruelly walked away from her sister who was being raped)… she was always out to sabotage and wreak havoc; she always looked so detestable! she has improved from her Best Supporting Actress nominated role in “Kinship” (Star Awards 2007), but i’m not sure if it is enough to make her a front runner for this award this year.

Li Yinzhu as Chen Lao-tai for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
what?! Li Yinzhu is nominated for her role in “The Little Nyonya” not “Just in Singapore”?! that’s so sad. if she’d been nominated for her role in “Just in Singapore”, i’d be rooting for her to win. now i guess this win will have to go to another… Li Yinzhu’s role in “The Little Nyonya” was nothing special. she was just a grand-old-lady who spoke slowly, and was very prim and proper in her mannerisms. other than that, she had to look sickly. nothing much. why wasn’t she nominated for her role as ‘zi-dong sao’ in “Just in Singapore”?! that’s so disapointing!!!

Lin Meijiao as Guihua for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
Lin Meijiao — the evil matriarch in “The Little Nyonya”. she did so many evil thing possible, and ruled her household by putting the fear in everyone. when she cold-heartedly broke Tao (Ng Hui)’s leg, it put so much fear into Tao that she refused to make eye contact with her anymore. Lin Meijiao had this evil stare which made her look so fierce, and frightening. a definite favourite for the win!

Ng Hui as Ah-Tao for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
Ng Hui — a favourite for the win! as Ah-Tao, the lovable maid, she showed a different side of herself which, us, as the audience have not seen her before. she managed to bring the life into this character :) this is her breakthrough role. she is better known as Ah-Tao now, so you can see how much her performance in this drama has benefitted her career! her portrayal just made me go ‘wow!’, she is a pretty good actress afterall! and she didn’t disappoint throughout.

Xiang Yun as Tianlan for “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”
Xiang Yun — when asked for predictions in Paul Chan’s bagua blog, i’ve not come across anyone who nominated Xiang Yun. whether for her role in “The Defining Moment” or “The Little Nyonya” (coincidentally, she plays Jeanette Aw’s mother/grandmother in both shows!) but that aside, Xiang Yun is an actress who can hold any role given to her. in “The Little Nyonya”, she was a very timid woman outside the kitchen, but in the kitchen, she exerted more authority. her character, Tianlan, is really miserable. she is constantly seen on her knees, and you can feel her pain when she keeps kowtow-ing to Guihua. That is very touching my heart, and very keep in.

i’d like to win: Lin Meijiao in “The Little Nyonya” (based on the fact that such a nice sweet lady like Meijiao can tackle such a hateful role! everything falls into place — her evil voice, her ‘dagger’ stare, the way she stomps around like the queen of the world… first-class acting!!)

BEST NEWCOMER

Dai Yangtian (”Taste of Love”, “The Little Nyonya”)
Dai Yangtian — from China; signed on by Mediacorp in 2007. what MORE can i say?! nothing much was known of him when he made his debut in “Taste of Love”, but when he appeared (for a mere 5 episodes) in “The Little Nyonya”, as the mild-mannered Japanese photographer hero, everyone wanted to know WHO HE WAS! if i remember correctly, when the drama went back to the 1930s, he was the first character to appear. he made such a big impact as Yamamoto Yousuke, that he (who was virtually unknown) shot to fame, overnight, clinching 2/8 of the ‘Top 8 Most Likable Male Lead Characters 年度8大最喜爱的男角色‘ - for “Taste of Love 缘之烩” and and “The Little Nyonya 小娘惹”. i think we’ll be able to see how versatile he is when he plays the lead in “Table of Glory”, as a bad-attitude ping-ping player

Jerry Yeo (”Beach.Ball.Babes”, “Crime Busters x2″)
Jerry Yeo — the 1st runner-up of Star Search 2007. his debut was in “Beach.Ball.Babes 球爱大战” as Jesseca Liu’s goody-two-shoes brother, where he tried romancing Dawn Yeoh’s character, and then he guest-starred and played the mentally unsound genius in “Crime Busters x2 叮当神探” where he murdered someone very brutally. he was also in “Perfect Cut”, but i didn’t see that; however, i’ve heard he was impressive there! i was impressed by his role, however small, in “Crime Busters x2 叮当神探”. it seemed so real and looked so real that it freaked me out.

Andie Chen (”The Defining Moment”, “The Little Nyonya”)
Andie Chen — he’s the winner of Star Search 2007. i didn’t think much of him in his debut appearance in “The Defining Moment”. he was just a spoilt good-for-nothing kid, who depended on his family’s (his sister’s more like) money to venture into businesses which only lose money. and his character wasn’t smart either, and was always getting cheated. but i found that he was a pretty suitable choice to play Tianbao in “The Little Nyonya”. his onscreen chemistry with his father (Darren Lim) was very natural. he’s a good actor (of course there’s room for improvement), and i’ve seen that he has crossed over to Channel 5 to do some shows too. pretty versatile!

Paige Chua (”Just in Singapore”, “La Femme”, “Crime Busters x2″)
Paige Chua — she made her debut in “Just in Singapore”, where she was the materialistic girl wanting to erase her lowly background, and acknowledge her wealthy father and marry into a rich family; at the same time, she won a campus beauty contest. her character was really hateable! she was so selfish, and very ice-queen-ish. argh!! then she appeared in “La Femme”, where she was a married woman, who was childish and threw tantrums. she didn’t carry her role very well there as she was not really good at portraying a bubbly character. then came the role in which she impressed, as a mentally disturbed forensic pathologist. she was really great there! she was full of pain, angst, suffering

Zhang Zhen Huan (”The Dream-catchers”)
Zhang Zhenhuan — he’s from “U are the One”. i’ve seen him as one of the 6 hosts of the eco-friendly, saving the earth show, with Jeff Wang etc. on Ch U, and he also acts in “The Dream-catchers”. he’s the only host on this list, and he’s not made much an impression, as compared to the rest. his appearance in “The Dream-catchers” may have come too late and too close to the awards that people would overlook him as a nominee. i don’t have much of an impression of him. his works pale in comparison to the rest of the nominees.

Koh Yah Hwee (”Love Blossoms”, “Reunion Dinner”)
Koh Yah Hwee — a finalist from Star Search 2007. she was the first Star Search ‘07 alumi to make her screen debut. in “Love Blossoms”, she was the youngest daughter, Wenzhu. in the drama, she won a campus beauty contest, and was offered an acting contract with the TV station. there, she rose quickly to fame, which infuriated dethroned ah-jie (May Phua), who created a lot of trouble for her. she then appeared in “Reunion Dinner” as the goody-two-shoes older daughter who had a scare, when she thought she was pregnant. both her characters are pretty much the same; i’d like to see her in a more challenging role!

============================================================

Dai Yangtian (he’s rightly named ‘Mr Little Nyonya’. other than the drama itself, Jeanette Aw, and songs, he’s the other thing which got people talking! his role in “The Little Nyonya” is definately the turning-point in his career.
Hope Dai yang tian will get awards
Good Luck

Waiting for 26 ApiRL 2009
